The feast of the Immaculate Heart
of Mary invites us to celebrate her single-heartedness. Today’s Gospel reading
brings out one dimension of her single-heartedness namely, her pondering heart.
Mary faced a number of situations
that she did not understand. The nativity narration and today’s Gospel reading
bring out the above claim explicitly.
However, the same is implicit in
the following events: when she hears Simeon’s prediction, when her Son appears
to be telling her at the Cana wedding that this does not concern us and when
she hears Jesus say, “Who is my mother?” and above all, at the foot of the
Cross.
Nevertheless, Mary kept moving on
pondering over all the events in her heart. Thus, her single-heartedness was
not based on external evidence, but trust – trust in God.
This gives us an invitation to
reflect on God’s ways with trust. When we experience some unpleasant events in
our lives, we seem to lose our faith in God. Our trust in God is often built on
external successful events which happen in our lives. Such a faith will not
last long. Rather, we need to build our relationship with God based on trust in
all circumstances.
Mary’s treasure was her Son, and
in him she has set her heart; Mary’s thoughts, words and deeds have their
beginning and their end in the contemplation of the Lord.
We celebrate Immaculate Heart of
Mary, a spotless Heart, full of God, totally willing to listen to him and obey
him. The main difference between the devotions to the two Hearts, of Jesus and
Mary is that the Sacred Heart of Jesus emphasizes His divine heart as being
full of “love for humankind”, while devotion to Mary’s Immaculate Heart is
essentially concerned wither heart as being full of “love for the Lord”.
What do we treasure in our
hearts? Anger? Guilt? Hurt feelings? Revengeful attitudes? Evil intentions?
Let’s remember the words of
Jesus: what defiles us is what comes from our heart and not what goes inside of
it. Like Mary let us treasure Jesus in our hearts, let’s treasure the Word of
God, and the God experiences.
Mary not only Kept things in her
heart but also POURED OUT things from her heart this is evident in her
Magnificat wherein she praises God. Her heart was full of God hence she brought
forth the praises of God. As the HEART so the PERSON.
Prayer:
Lord, give me an unwavering heart
so that I may trust in you always.
